19th-century letter writing evolved dramatically, shaping how people navigated their social and professional lives.

The Letter
I composed a letter to my love today
On the palest yellow woven paper
Smooth and perfect to the touch
Waiting in anticipation for my words
I selected my oldest gold nibbed pen
Black ink with a wide oblique point
Superb for both fine and broad strokes
Providing a feeling of artistic creation
Each word I choose with conscious care
Because words matter to my lover
To ensure the deepest comprehension
Of lines which will be reread many times
Ruminated ideas pour from my pen
Intertwining the intimacies of bed talk
With lots of only us understandings
Sounding much louder on the paper
My ink flows rapidly across the bond
Words spilling from the nib with ease
Questions, thoughts, hopes and desires
As if we were in closest conversation
Finally, with a deep pressing on the weave
I sign my name with ornaments of affection
Slip the pages into the envelope
And seal it with my finger along the flap
Far away, she may wait some time to open it
Prop it up against the milk jug at breakfast
Or set it down beside her knife or napkin
Delaying the pleasure my letter always brings
And later, after she has read it many times
She will tie it up with a frayed pink ribbon
On top of all the other carefully crafted letters
Which have been written for her eyes, alone.
